THE DRIVER OF INNOVATION

THE NEW CAMPUS FOR THE SCIENTIFIC FACULTIES OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY WITHIN MIND-MILANO INNOVATION DISTRICT

Starching, along with Redesco Progetti, Manens, and EPTA, responsible respectively for the architectural, structural, and plant engineering design, as well as space planning, in collaboration with CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, which defined the overall architectural concept, have signed the project for the new Campus of the State University under construction in Mind. This new hub for the younger generations is part of a large-scale urban regeneration project promoted by Lendlease, an international group with a 99-year concession for the private development of the area.

The new university campus will span over 190,000 square meters and accommodate a community of 23,000 people. The project reaffirms the university’s centrality as a physical space for meetings, dialogues, and cultural exchanges. In synergy with other focal points in the area, such as the Galeazzi Hospital and the Human Technopole, the Campus will be a reference point at regional, national, and European levels for research and innovation.

The new Campus will be developed around five courtyards surrounded by brick buildings, a distinctive element chosen as a tribute to Milanese architecture and the inner courtyard of Ca’ Granda, the ancient and prestigious central headquarters of the State University.

“Design features that refer to the urban planning principle of ‘Common Ground,’ namely, an uninterrupted public space that winds through the entire neighborhood via walkways, cloisters, and courtyards,” specifies Andrea Alloni, partner and director at Starching overseeing the project. “The Campus will be the place where not only scientific subjects but also the concept of the city itself will be studied. Research will focus on the user and the ecosystem, actively involving residents and thus developing new ways of interaction between public and private.”

Not only innovation but also sustainability. The new hub has been designed to perform according to the parameters of the international energy and environmental certification LEED, which will be at least Gold level, thanks to the 100% decarbonized energy network and participation in the social innovation project ‘Programma 2121’.

“As observed in many other cases where research-related destinations have engaged citizens in a virtuous partnership, we can expect an acceleration of creative processes and greater virtuosity at this site,” continues Andrea Alloni. “There will be hybrid spaces deliberately oriented to encourage multiple activities capable of establishing collaborative networks between researchers, students, and facility users. An open and highly permeable relationship with spaces, hoping that this Campus can become an example for other universities, where companies themselves may find worthy investments.”
